Christoph Demuth, son of Gottleib Demuth and wife Eva Barbara Gutsler (the widow of Henry Hehl), was born 12 Aug 1755 (new tombstone 22 Aug) in Allemangel, Lynn Twp. PA; baptized 14 Sep 1755; and died 27 Jan 1823 (new tombstone 1822) in Warwick Twp., Tuscarawas Co OH. He was married 8 Apr 1777 in Northampton Co PA to Susanna Catherine Klein, daughter of Andreas Henry Klein and wife Jane Elizabeth Thomas, who was born 2 Jan 1759 in Lacona Twp., Northampton Co PA; and died 15 Jul 1817 in Warwick Twp., Tuscarawas Co OH, of a severe hemorrhage. It is interesting to note that an adult baptism found at Schoeneck Moravian Church in Nazareth PA gives a slightly different first name: "21 Jun 1778 was the eldest daughter of Andreas Klein, but now the lawful wife of Christopher Demuth, baptized by Bro. Franz Laemke in Schoeneck with the name Maria Susanna." Christoph Demuth married second 16 Apr 1818 to Elizabeth Guenther, widow of Peter Guenther. Christoph Demuth's father was a member of the Moravian congregation who came to Georgia in 1736 and then to Germantown PA in Jan 1738. Christoph's baptism is found in the Allemangel Moravian Church in 1755. He served in the Northampton County militia during the Revolutionary War, as a private in the 3rd Company, 2nd Battalion, PA Militia. Records at the Mission at Goshen in Tuscarawas Co OH indicate that Christopher Demuth was a visitor there on 21 Sep 1800. He apparently acquired land and returned to Shoeneck PA for his family, arriving at Gnadenhutten OH on 5 Jul 1803 with his wife and nine children. The year end report states that "Brother and Sister Demuth, with the largest part of their children, moved from their farm into the village." Abraham Levering of Lititz, Lancaster Co PA, deeded 175 acres on both sides of the Muskingum (now Tuscarawas River) to Christopher Demuth on 4 Oct 1809. Levering had acquired the tract from John Heckewelder by deed dated 12 Jan 1801, the land at that time, a part of Newtown Twp., Washington Co OH, and recorded in Marietta. Christoph Demuth appears on the first Tuscarawas Co tax list, taken in 1809, with 1 horse and 2 cattle. He sold 34 acres of his tract to his son John on 22 Apr 1816. He and John are listed in 1820 in Warwick Twp., Tuscarawas Co OH, p. 150. Christopher and Susanna Catherine Demuth were buried at God's Acre Cemetery in Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas Co OH.
