HIRAM SANDERS & WIFE REBECCA McDANIEL WORKSHEET - UNION CO IL

Hiram Sanders, b. ca. 1800 GA; m. ca. 1820 Rebecca McDaniel, b. ca. 1802 SC (census estimates); death dates uncertain for both. I did not have a clue about anyone named Hiram Sanders until I spotted a Rootsweb post by Wayne Herndon who supplied a family record for the above couple taken from a Freeman Family Bible owned by a cousin of a correspondent Helen Shirley. This listed the exact birth date of my ancestor Cornelius Sanders of Texas Co MO. I had been trying to link him to his neighbor Andrew Jackson Sanders (son of Peter and Michel Tarbutton Sanders) who may indeed turn out to be an uncle of Cornelius.

Family Record:

Hiram Sanders – wife Rebecca

Children:

  1. Mary Ann Sanders, born March 7, 1820
  2. Archibald McDaniel Sanders, born May 9, 1822
  3. Moses Ezekiel Sanders, born May 27, 1826
  4. Cornelius Sanders, born October 9, 1828 [possibly Elias Cornelius Sanders]
  5. Finas Ewen Sanders, born April 27, 1830 [aka Phineas Ewing Sanders]
  6. Lucinda Katherine Sanders, born April 19, 1832
  7. Elizabeth Jane Sanders, born July 24, 1834

1830 Census Bedford Co TN, p. 5, lists Hiram Sanders with 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 20-30; neighbors were Lemuel Brichien [?] and James F. Wood.

1835 State Census for Union Co IL, p. 29 (LDS 964132) shows Hiram Saunders with a large household, viz., 4 males under 10, 2 females under 10, 1 male 10-20, 1 female 10-20, 1 male 30-40, and 1 female 30-40. Neighbors were William Shirley and John Whitaker.

1839 - Sanders must have still been living in or near Union Co IL in April 1839 when he is mentioned in his daughter Mary Ann’s marriage consent. Neighbor George McGhehey gave the affidavit: “You need not tell Sanders of this as he is not willing for the marriage and he will think hard of me etc.” Union Co IL Loose Marriage Consents, LDS 964134.

1839 - Union Co IL Probate Records 1818-1845, by Darrel Dexter, p. 30, Estate of Nimrod Eberley, died 4 Dec 1839, Debts, Hiram Sanders, 10 Aug 1839, $36.75, including boarding for two months, feeding horse, washing and mending. No township location noted in abstract.

1840 - I have not been able to locate Hiram Sanders in the 1840 census.

1841 - There is a mortgage recorded in Cape Girardeau Co MO (Deed Vol. K, p. 95-96) for Hiram Saunders to Archibald Saunders, for the SW ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 17, Twp. 31 N, Range 12 E, containing 40 acres. This was recorded on 12 Nov 1841. This seems to be the same parcel noted in the land entry below which says 1847. I rechecked the dates on both references.

1845 - There is supposed to be an 1845 state census for Illinois. There are no films on FamilySearch but a couple counties do appear on Ancestry.com – not Union County.

1847 - Hiram Sanders of Cape Girardeau Co MO made a land entry at the Jackson Land Office for the SW ¼ NE ¼ of fractional Section 17, Twp. 34 N, Range 12 E, containing 40 acres, on 17 Feb 1847, Certificate #8074, Vol. 353 (Missouri), p. 232. Cape Girardeau County MO is directly across the river from Union County IL. His son, Cornelius, later got military bounty land in Cape Girardeau County. I might note that there are at least 20 deeds for one “Hy. Sanders” in Cape Girardeau Co MO during this time period, but after much study, I have determined that the clerk had an unusual abbreviation for Henry. These deeds do not apply to our Hiram.

1850 - In the 1850 census, this family is in District 2, Union Co IL, p. 212: Hiram Sanders 50 Farmer GA, Rebecca 48 SC, Harriet 7 MO, Jasper 3 AR, Archibald Sanders 28 Farmer AL, Nancy 21 IL married within year, James 6 IL, Harriet 4 IL, Catharine 18 TN; neighbors Daniel Benet and John Stone. Hiram Sanders does not appear in the 1850 agricultural schedule, however, his son, Archibald Sanders (who was living in his father’s household) is listed. He has 35 acres improved, 83 acres unimproved, $600 value, $120 value of farming implements, 4 horses, 4 milch cows, 5 other cattle, 12 sheep, 20 swine, $182 value of livestock, 50 bushels wheat, 400 bushels corn, 50 bushels oats, etc. I do not find anything in the grantee or grantor indices for Union Co IL for Hiram or Archibald Sanders, so they may have rented the farm. The agricultural schedule (1850) lists the “owner, agent, or manager” of the farm. There are some entries in the Cape Girardeau Co MO indices, but I am not convinced that I am reading the “Hy” in the handwriting correctly nor that this is the same family. Jonathan Freize and wife to Hy Sanders and Frederick Sanders, 27 Feb 1854, lots 36 and 37 in Range “C”, per Deed Book Q, p. 688-689 and 695-696; also Hy Sanders and wife to Frederick Sanders, part SW ¼ and w ½ Lot 2 NW ¼ Sect. 3, Twp. 30, Range 12 East, dated 22 May 1854, in Deed Book Q, p. 784-786; also Jonathan Frieze and wife to Hy Sanders, a lot in Range C, date 29 Sep 1854, in Deed Book R, p. 173-175; also Hy Sanders and wife to Chas J. Sanders, SW ¼ NE ¼ and S ½ Lot 1, NW ¼ and W ½ SE ¼ N E ¼ Sect. 30, Twp. 31 N, Range 12 E, date 17 Oct 1855, in Deed Book S, p. 45-46. We do not have a Frederick Sanders nor a Charles J. Sanders in our family and the township does not match the 1847 land entry.

1855 - Hiram Sanders does appear in the 1855 state census for Union Co IL, p. 17, with 1 male under 10, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 50-60, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-20, and 1 female 30-40. Neighbors were Harriet Brock and John Corgan. Livestock was only valued at $10.00.

1859 - Union Co IL Probate Records 1856-1868, by Darrel Dexter, p. 320: Hiram Sanders one of purchasers at estate sale on 21 May 1859; estate of Christopher Houser Sr., died 1 Apr 1859; land in township 11 South, Range 2 West.

1859 - It is not known at this time if Hiram Sanders died in 1859-1860. His name does not appear on either the Union Co IL or Wright Co MN mortality schedules (2nd half 1859, 1st half 1860). I see nothing in the probate indexes in Union Co IL for any Sanders during this time period. He is not named in the 1860 census.

1860 - Rebecca Sanders 57 $400/00 KY is living in Franklin Twp., Wright Co MN, p. 67, of all places in 1860, with a Jasper N. Sanders 14 AR. Neighbors were her son-in-law Elial Freeman and Luther Walter. Next to Elial Freeman, one Harriet Sanders 18 MO is living with John and Harriet A. Cunningham.

1861 - Union County, Illinois Genealogical Information, Vol. 2, Early Courthouse Records 1818-1938, by Darrel Dexter, p. 180: County Commissioners Records 1831-1870, 4 Sep 1861, C.H. Willeford was allowed $5 for making the coffin for Mr. Sanders. Unfortunately, the first name is not given. Rebecca Sanders is listed in a separate household in Minnesota in 1860 and her $400 worth is in the real property slot, not personal property, as one might expect (suggesting that she is permanently in Minnesota and not just visiting her daughter). Since Hiram is not found in the 1860 census and would not likely have stayed in Illinois, this coffin might have been for a different Sanders family.

There are several Milwaukee Land Office entries for a Hiram Sanders – 1 Mar 1848 for 80 acres S ½ SE 9 N 17 E 5; 1 Feb 1848 for 40 acres in NW SE 9N 17 E 5; 1 Feb 1848 in W ½ NW 9 N 17 E 8; 1 Aug 1849 for 40 acres in SW NE 9 N 17 E 5; 80 acres on 1 Jan 1850 in E ½ SW 10 N 16 E 36; and 80 acres 1 Jan 1850 in SE NE and NE SE 9 N 17 E 5. These are supposed to be Minnesota or Wisconsin but I haven’t tried to line the land up to a map to see if the tracts are in Wright Co.

1870 - We have not been able to locate Rebecca Sanders in the 1870 census, her son-in-law, Elial Freeman living in Walker Twp., Anderson Co KS by that date, and her housemate, Jasper N. Saunders, living with the Cornelius Saunders family in Clinton Twp., Texas Co. MO.

I have no proof of the maiden name of the wife of Hiram Sanders or of the children. This information is given on a Rootsweb page [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendon/cipp/thesanders.html] submitted by Archibald Sanders descendant Wayne Herndon. He says he received this list of parents and children (names and birth dates only) via email from Helen Shirley. It came from a Freeman family Bible. At this point, because Harriet and Jasper are not mentioned in this family record, I am not including them as children of Hiram and Rebecca Sanders. Another email correspondent, a Look family descendant, had the name “---- McDaniel” as the mother of Catherine Look who died in California in 1909. Perhaps her death certificate or obituary says this? Another email correspondent, Herman Sanders, believes that “Hiram James” Sanders and his wife Rebecca both died in Union Co IL, and he lists Limestone Co AL as the birthplace of a son, Archibald Sanders. These counties in Alabama – Limestone, Madison, and Jackson, and moving north into Tennessee – Lincoln and Bedford, are certainly the home area of the Sanders family.

Children were:

  1. Mary Ann, b. 7 Mar 1820 TN; m(1) 11 Apr 1839 Union Co IL to Andrew J. Cates; m(2) 13 Jan 1850 Union Co IL to Eliel Freeman. To Franklin Twp., Wright Co MN 1860; Walker Twp., Anderson Co KS 1870; Lincoln Twp., Anderson Co KS 1880.

Stubbs Cem. (This is my line.)
  5. Finas Ewen Sanders, b. 27 Apr 1830. No further information.
  6. Lucinda Katherine Sanders, b. 19 Apr 1832 Madison Co IL; d. 7 Aug 1909 Orange Co CA; m. 20 May 1856 Madison Co IL to Isaac Newton Look. To Madison Co IL 1860; Saunders Co NE 1870 and 1880; Lincoln, Lancaster Co NE 1900.
  7. Elizabeth Jane Sanders, b. 24 Jul 1834; possibly the one who married 12 Sep 1867 Union Co IL to David Love. Not located in 1870 census.

Note: Is a marriage of “Mrs.” Anna Sanders to James A. Roach occurring 4 Apr 1846 in Union Co IL (v. 1, p. 185). The James Roach family lived near the above Sanders family and was a next door neighbor to Harriet (Bennett) Green before she married Archibald McDaniel Sanders. In the 1850 census, p. 226, District 2, Union Co IL: James Roach 57 TN Farmer; Scynthia 46 KY; John Mann 12 IL; Permelia Mann 14 IL; neighbors William Ballard and Levi Black. Her first husband’s identity is not known at this time. In 1860, Twp. 13 S, Range 3 W, Union Co IL, Union Point P.O., p. 658: Cynthia Roach 59 KY ---/$175; neighbors Stephen Wilcot and William Ballard; William Roach and Anthony Roach nearby. Could not locate her in 1870 census.

Note: Jasper N. Sanders, b. Jan 1847 AR, is in Union Co IL 1850 with Hiram; in Wright Co MN 1860 with Rebecca; in Texas Co MO 1870 with Cornelius; in McDonald Co MO 1880; and possibly the one in Jasper Co MO 1900. There are at least two other Jasper N. Sanders just a year or two younger than ours.

Note: Harriet Sanders, b. ca. 1843 MO, is living with Hiram and Rebecca Sanders in District 2, Union Co IL in the 1850 census, p. 212. In 1860, she is age 18 MO, living with the John and Harriet A. Cunningham family in Franklin P.O., Franklin Twp., Wright Co MN, p. 67, next door to Elial Freeman. She is probably the Harriet Sanders who m. 16 Nov 1861 Wright Co MN (v. A, p. 29) to Oliver Steward. In the 1870 census, there is an Oliver Steward 35 Druggist $4000/$500 OH living with the Dr. Perry Chance family in Crow River P.O., Wright Co MN, p. 6 & 7 (handwritten); neighbors Thadeus Kerr and Frank M. Hopkins; no wife listed.

Eight children born to them, 7 sons and 1 daughter, all living except 1 son. At his bedside were sons Henry, George, and James.” The obituary doesn’t mention the status of his wife. Perhaps Mary Ann died before him and was buried in California for some reason? On 5 Mar 1897, H. C. Freeman was named administrator of Eliel Freeman, deceased (Anderson Co KS Probate Journal 3, p. 199). The settlement was recorded 11 Apr 1898 by Henry C. Freeman, and $60.00 was divided among the heirs, viz., James E. Freeman, P. M. Freeman, George W. Freeman, Marshall Freeman, H. C. Freeman, Mary A. Shade nee Freeman, and Arthur W. & Edward E. 1850 Census, District 2, Union Co IL, p. 212: Archibald Sanders 28 AL Farmer; Nancy 21 IL, married within year; James 6 IL; Harriet 4 IL; living with his parents; neighbors Daniel Benet and John Stone.

Archibald Sanders is listed in the 1850 Union Co IL agricultural schedule with 35 acres improved, 83 acres unimproved, $600 value, $120 value of farming implements, 4 horses, 4 milch cows, 5 other cattle, 12 sheep, 20 swine, $182 value of livestock, 50 bushels wheat, 400 bushels corn, 50 bushels oats, etc.

Pages 24-25, 1859 tax roll, Archibald Sanders, grouped with Jonathan Sanders and William Sanders. Pages 26-27, 1861 tax roll, Archibald M. Sanders separate from other Sanders groups.

1860 Census, Antelope P.O., Jack Co TX, p. 356: Archibald Mc. Saunders 35 IL Farmer $400/$500; Pieta A. 22 TN no read/write; James 16 IL school; Serrilda 14 IL school; Susan 1 TX; neighbors James G. Tackett and J. Milt Hays.

Because Archibald McDaniel Sanders likely served in the militia unit that responded to the following incident, I am going to mention it. A local history book, Ninety-four Years in Jack County 1854-1948, by Ida Lasater Huckabay (Texas), p. 60, includes an article on the murder of the Landman family in Parker County – “When the Indians reached the Gage home they shot and killed Jane Masterson. They also murdered Mrs. Sanders and shot Mrs. Gage several times with arrows and knocked her in the head with rocks, leaving her for dead as they did little Polly.” (not sure of date) On page 64, it was further noted that the massacres enraged the citizens, call were made for volunteers, J.J. Cureton was selected as captain of the Citizens’ Company, organized 1860 with members, M.D. Sanders, Second Lieutenant, among others [think M.D. may stand for McDaniel]. One James Sanders also served in the above company (p. 65). On page 68 is a letter to Gov Sam Houston written by Robert Bean, dated 30 Nov 1860 Jack Co TX – “Indian invasion in our county on the 26th day of Nov 1860 --- the Indians killed the old lady Sanders (or Saunders) and wounded Mrs. Gage and her three children ---.” I note that there is a Jack Co TX marriage for Alexander Sanders to Miss Matilda Gage 10 Feb 1861, by Robert Bean, Chief Justice, so the “old lady Sanders” killed by Indians may be a different Sanders family, because of this later Sanders/Gage affiliation.

Trails West (periodical – Parker Co Gen Soc), v. 12 #2, Jan 1982, p. 21: List of Jury Scrip paid 18 Aug 1860 to 18 Nov 1861, Parker Co TX, includes M.D. Sanders.

She was married first, by tradition (said Edith Sanders Neel 1893-1979), to a brother of her second husband, probably the Lewis Sanders, age 20-30, wife 15-20, in 1840 Cache Twp., Greene Co. Since Lewis is not listed in the Hiram Sanders family record, the brothers tradition is probably inaccurate. Perhaps they were cousins. Lewis Sanders appears on Greene Co AR tax lists from 1840 through 1845 enumerated next to Peter Sanders.
