James Worthington Uncles, parents not known, was born 5 Aug 1794 in Bradford, England, and died 25 Jan 1835 in Columbus, Franklin Co OH. He was married 26 Sep 1816 at Franklinton, Franklin Co OH [Vol. 2, pp. 30, 34] by James Hoge to Elizabeth "Betsey" Criswell. She was born in Lancaster PA, parents not known. James Uncles arrived in Columbus (Franklinton) in the year 1812, according to the Centennial Biographical History of the City of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio, p. 321, where he followed the trade of "decorating." James Uncles is listed in the 1830 census in Montgomery Twp., Franklin Co OH, p. 70. The Ohio State Journal for 31 Jan 1835 reports that "James Uncles, of this city, died Jan. 25, 1838, aged about 40 years, leaving a widow and children." James Uncles was engaged in decorating the home of Dr. Parsons, where he caught a severe cold, which resulted in pneumonia, from which he died. There is a guardianship for the children (Franklin County, case #1193, 1194) dated 1837. We cannot locate the widow Elizabeth Uncles in the 1840 census, but there is an Eviline Uncles, age 30-40, in Montgomery Twp., Franklin Co OH, p. 203, with several apparent children. The Uncles family were members of the Episcopal Church. Buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus is a Mark Uncles, son of Mathew and Nancy Uncles, born 20 Jun 1804 in Beamfort, England. Perhaps this is a brother to James Uncles. There is also a Sarah Uncles, born 1795 England, parents not listed, on the John Uncles lot. An attempt has been made to locate the parents of Elizabeth (Criswell) Uncles, as well. The Centennial Biographical History, cited previously, states that Elizabeth Criswell was from Lancaster PA and was left an orphan at an early age, being reared in the family of Dr. Ball, of Franklinton (Columbus), remaining there until her 1816 marriage. However, there was an Alexander Criswell who, according to Franklin Co OH Chancery Vol. II, p. 426, was "dead & insolvent" in 1823.
